The overall vision is that of a concept of a platform for integrated high-quality research in human-computer interfaces, ambient intelligent environments, intelligent agents, human language technology and an advanced web server concept requiring the storage and access of very large amounts of personal memory.

The Companions core notion is that of a machine "personality", which could be embodied in any form, and form a companion for that person. It could be in the form of a fluffy animal, or a walkman type device or a plain TV. The Companion would help them in their daily life.
